There have long been broad discussions about how they affect the sound of the turntable pad. The interaction between the record and the surface can be very easily detected using a high-quality and more sensitive pickup. Common felt pads guarantee a smooth contact between the board and the plate, but they have the disadvantage of being static. This means that dust particles often bind to each other, which then get into the grooves of the record. Also, the damping ability is very limited, which can be a problem with metal platters.
