This pair of Q Acoustics Q 5040 Compact Floorstanding Speakers is part of the 5000 series from Q Acoustics and is designed for stereo hi-fi or as part of a wider home theatre setup. Its most noteworthy feature is the addition of Continuous Curved Cone™ mid-bass drivers. This meticulously designed new driver, first featured in the Concept range, combines the best characteristics of flare and straight cone types for the best mid and bass character yet from the brand at this price.
These CCC drivers symmetrically frame a hermetically sealed tweeter which also takes its design from the Concept range with dome fabric and a compact neo-motor. The three drive units are mounted to, but well isolated from, front baffling. This black baffling can be found across all four colour variants of the 5040 floorstanders for stylish contrast.
Continuous Curved Cone™
First seen in Q Acoustics’ flagship Concept speaker range and now brought to the 5000 series, the Continuous Curved Cone (CCC) design addresses limitations arising from straight and flared cones. Thorough multi-disciplinary research and development aimed to blend the most desirable characteristics of both the straight cone’s bass character and the flared cone’s mid-range control. Computer modeling was used to create the CCC profile which best combined these traits. The result is a drive unit with superior dispersion, frequency and amplitude linearity. Moreover, the CCC is more resilient to modulation by standing waves within the cabinet. Better, tighter bass with more dynamic range and detail means you can be more flexible with speaker placement and still achieve fantastic results.
Contemporary Baffled Cabinet Design
The minimalist design of the 5040 speakers is reminiscent of the latest Concept speaker series from the brand. Baffle fronts are laminated with a layer of butyl rubber and black acrylic trim, not only providing a damping layer to suppress baffle vibrations but also creating an eye-catching contrast to the surrounding satin and wood finishes available in this series. The cabinets are constructed from 20mm MDF for the larger cabinets in the series. Baffles across all models are made with 25mm HDF for greater durability. The lightweight open-frame grille design maximises transparency and is attached using bonded trim and magnetic fixings for an attractive visual and acoustic display. The tower models also come with adjustable spikes and protective spike covers as a preventative measure against floor damage. Anodized aluminium stabilisers with top-adjustable spikes make levelling simple.
Helmhotz Pressure Equalisers™
Q Acoustics has equipped the 5040 and 5050 floorstanding speakers with HPE™ (Helmholtz Pressure Equalizer) technology to address cabinet resonance issues which often plague taller loudspeakers. By converting pressure to velocity, this technology reduces the overall pressure gradient within the enclosure, which helps prevent the speakers from resonating at a single, problematic frequency.
P2P™ Bracing
The Q Acoustics 5040 floorstanding speakers have been designed with P2P™ (Point to Point) bracing technology. Unlike conventional bracing systems, P2P bracing is tailored to support the specific parts of the enclosure that require stiffening without transferring unwanted energy or exacerbating cabinet structure modality. This ensures that the speakers are exceptionally rigid, thereby improving the focus of stereo imaging and giving the soundstage greater accuracy. The P2P bracing system is a result of careful engineering by the design team at Q Acoustics who have only applied it in exactly the right places to effectively and efficiently reduce cabinet resonances.
Crossover
Q Acoustics' new 5040 floorstanding speakers feature modified 2nd order crossovers with a 2.5 kHz crossover point. All models in the 5000 series, including the 5040, have a nominal load impedance of 6 Ohms and use high-quality components in their crossover, including metallized polyester film capacitors, low saturation air core inductors, and bifilar wound wire-wound resistors to minimize parasitic inductance.
